1 Nephi 14

Location: the wilderness

People: Nephi

Important events & details:

  • Nephi continues to see the things his father saw in a vision. The angel tells Nephi about Church of the Lamb of God and the church of the devil, and how the saints all over the world are persecuted by the church of the devil.
  • Nephi is also sees the apostle John shall write about the end of the world.

Favorite verses:

14 …I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon the saints of the church of the Lamb…and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory.

Thoughts/Reflections:

  • Chapter 13 and 14 were more difficult for me to read and understand, I think I wasn’t as focused on my reading/studying, but I knew that I didn’t want to miss a day of scripture study so I read it, and got through it, but I didn’t get as much out of it as I could have.
  • I do like that the last verse of chapter 14 ends with Nephi saying “the things which I have written are true”, ending with his testimony. For now, even when I have a hard time focusing, or difficulty understanding, his testimony gives me faith and encourages me that the things I am reading are true and important. And that’s enough for me today.

Questions:

  • What can I do differently in my approach to studying and reading the scriptures each day so that I can get more out of them?

1 Nephi 10

Location: the wilderness

People: Lehi & Nephi

Important events and details:

  • Lehi tells of a vision he has, that in 600 years from the time his family left Jerusalem a Messiah, or Savior of the world would be born. Lehi also tells of how the Messiah would be baptized with water, slain by the Jews, and then rise from the dead and manifest himself unto the Gentiles.
  • After Lehi finished telling about his visions Nephi was desirous that he see, hear, and know of these things too.

Favorite verses:

6 Wherefore, all mankind were in a lost and fallen state, and ever would be save they should rely on this Redeemer.

18 For he is the same yesterday, today, and forever; and the way is prepared for all men form the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him.

19 For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.

Thoughts/Reflections:

  • Christ’s life and the important things He would accomplish while on earth were prophesied before He was even born. This is why the Book of Mormon and the Bible go hand in hand, we see the prophesies or Christ’s life in the Book of Mormon, and then we are able to read of His life and death in the Bible. We then see His resurrection and appearance to the Nephites later in the Book of Mormon. It’s only with both books that we get the full picture of His life and purpose as Savior of the world.

Questions:

  • When prophets and apostles speak (in general conference), or even when the Bishop or people speak and teach (in church on Sundays), do I show a desire to know and have a witness of truth of what they say?
  • Am I living my life in a way that the Holy Ghost is my constant companion and is able to confirm the truths of the gospel to me?

1 Nephi 7

Location: the wilderness & Jerusalem

People: Nephi & his family, and Ishmael & his family

Important events & details:

  • Nephi and his brothers return to Jerusalem to get Ishmael and his family in order to be able to marry and have children in the wilderness.
  • While journeying Laman, Lemuel, two daughters of Ishmael, and two sons of Ishmael rebel against the others because they want to return to Jerusalem. When Nephi rebukes them they tie him up and “seek to take away [his] life”.
  • Nephi prayed to Heavenly Father and his bands were loosened, some of Ishmael’s family were able to convince the others of their wrongdoing, and Nephi forgave them.

Favorite verses:

12 Yea, and how is it that ye have forgotten that the Lord is able to do all things according to his will, for the children of men, if it so be that they exercise faith in him? Wherefore, let us be faithful to him.

21 And it came to pass that I did frankly forgive them all that they had done…

Thoughts/Reflections:

  • No matter how many times Nephi’s brothers rebel against him, he continually remains faithful to the Lord and reminds them to be faithful too.
  • Even after they seek to take away his life, Nephi has enough love and faith in his heart the he immediately forgives his brothers.

Questions:

  • Do I have enough charity in my heart to immediately forgive those who do wrong against me?

1 Nephi 5

Location: the wilderness

People: Nephi’s family – no new people

Important events and details:

  • Sariah complains to Lehi that he is a visionary man, and now because of it their sons are lost. Lehi comforts Sariah by telling her that the Lord will deliver their sons.
  • Nephi and his brothers return with the brass plates, Lehi and Sariah offer sacrifice and burnt offerings to thank God, and Lehi begins to search the brass plates. Lehi discovers that they are descendants of Joseph of Egypt.

Favorite verses:

18 That these plates of brass should go forth unto all nations, kindreds, tongues and people who were of his seed.

21 And we had obtained the records which the Lord had commanded us, and searched them and found that they were desirable; yea, even of great worth unto us…

22 Wherefore, it was wisdom in the Lord that we should carry them with us…

Thoughts/Reflections:

  • Sometimes we are given commandments, not knowing why or what kinds of blessing they will bring, but when we follow and keep them, we see the blessing we receive and are able to glimpse a part of Heavenly Father’s plan for us.

Questions:

  • Am I as anxious to study and search the scriptures as Nephi and Lehi?

1 Nephi 4

Location: Jerusalem

People: Zoram (servant of Laban)

Important events and details:

  • Nephi returns into the city to try a third time to get the brass plates. He finds Laban drunk and passed out on the ground. The spirit tells Nephi to kill Laban, but Nephi struggles with this prompting. After the spirit tells Nephi that it is better for one man to die than a whole nation to dwindle in unbelief Nephi kills Laban with his own sword and dresses in his clothes.
  • Nephi returns to Laban’s house dressed up like him and has Zoram, the servant get the plates and carry them outside the city walls where his “elder brethren” are waiting. Zoram thinks Nephi is talking about the elders of the Jews and follows Nephi.
  • When Nephi’s brothers see him they are afraid, thinking he is Laban and has killed Nephi. Nephi calls to them, and then stops Zoram, who now realizing he is not Laban is scared and trying to run away.
  • Nephi promises Zoram that if he follows them into the wilderness he will be a free man, so Zoram makes an oath and follows them out of Jerusalem.

Favorite verses:

1 …let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord; for behold he is mightier than all the earth, then why not mightier than Laban…

6 And I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do.

34 … Surely the Lord hath commanded us to do this thing; and shall we not be diligent in keeping the commandments of the Lord?

Thoughts/Reflections:

  • Nephi was diligent and faithful always, knowing that he might have to try multiple times, and it would be hard, but that the Lord would provide a way for him to follow His commandments.
  • Even a prophet like Nephi will questions promptings, but ultimately he follows and obeys every time.
  • The Lord often expects us to try and work things out our own way before He provides us with or shows us a way to do things. But when we rely on Him, He will always help us and lead us to do the right thing.

Questions:

  • How many times am I willing to try to follow a commandment from the Lord, even if it is hard or I am not able to get it right the first time.

1 Nephi 2

Location: the wilderness, by the borders of the Red Sea

People: Sariah (Nephi’s mother), and Laman, Lemuel, and Sam (his older brothers)

Important events and details:

  • Lehi obeys God, takes his family, and leaves Jerusalem. They leave behind all they’re “gold, silver, precious things”, which cause Laman and Lemuel to murmur against their father.
  • When Lehi gets into the wilderness the first thing he does is build an alter and make an offering to the Lord.
  • Lehi confounded the Nephi’s two elder brothers and they stopped murmuring against him and did as he commanded them. But Nephi desired to know if his father’s word were true for himself, so he prayed and his heart was softened and he believed. He told his brother Sam, who also believed in his words, but the two oldest brother would not believe.

Favorite verses:

12 … And they did murmur because they knew not the dealings of the God who had created them.

20 And inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments, ye shall prosper, and shall be led to a land of promise; yea, even a land which I have prepared for you; yea, a land which is choice above all other lands.

Thoughts/Reflections:

  • Lehi remembered God in all things, even after he had just left his home and all his belongings the first thing he did was give an offering to God in gratitude for His guidance and the blessings He had given them. Lehi understood that his family was being guided by a loving Heavenly Father who would protect and guide them through the wilderness and who would bless them for their faith and obedience.
  • Laman and Lemuel were not able to have faith in the Lord because they did not understand how He worked. Because they did not have a relationship with Him and they didn’t understand Him they were unable to follow Him or feel His guidance and blessings.
  • Nephi prayed to know for himself if his father was speaking the truth and because of his faith and diligence he was blessed and was able to gain the testimony of the truth. He was also able to help Sam to believe. Sam believed on the words of other who knew – he was able to lean on Nephi’s testimony, not yet having one of his own – which is ok! Everyone has to start somewhere, the hope is that he will eventually come to know for himself and gain his own testimony.
  • The Lord promised Nephi’s family that they would be led to a land He had prepared for them. He is always preparing blessings for us. We may not be able to see them, or we don’t know what He has in store, but He is just waiting for us to be obedient and follow Him so that He can bless us and take us to the land He has prepared for us.

Questions:

  • Am I like the two older brother, disbelieving because I don’t have a strong enough relationship with Christ and Heavenly Father? Or am I like Nephi who prays to know the truth for himself?
  • Do I follow God even when I don’t see or know what He has prepared for me?

1 Nephi 1

Location: Jerusalem (first year of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah)

People: Nephi and Lehi (his father)

Important events and details:

  • Lehi sees a vision of God upon His throne, surrounded by angels. He also sees Christ and the twelve apostles come down to minister on the earth. Christ gives Lehi a book, which fills him with the Spirit. He reads that Jerusalem is to be destroyed and the people will be destroyed or taken captive into Babylon.
  • Lehi preaches of the destruction of Jerusalem, the coming of the Messiah, and the redemption of the world – the Jews mock him.
  • Nephi explains that he makes an abridgment of his father’s record and then an account of his proceedings

Favorite verses:

20 … But behold I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.

Thoughts/Reflections:

  • One of the first things Nephi mentions is that he knows the record he makes is true – the BoM opens with his testimony of it’s truthfulness. It was important to him that I know immediately that he knew the importance of the BoM in my life.
  • Nephi ends the chapter by saying that he will show us the tender mercies of the Lord. The BoM’s purpose is to bring us closer to Christ – to help us learn of Him, understand Him, and come to know Him. Nephi wants me to know that in the BoM I will find accounts of Christ’s tender mercies to those who have faith in Him.

Questions:

  • Do I show faith in Christ by diligently and obediently following the words of His prophets? Do I ever mock their teachings with my words or actions?
  • Am I aware of and do I show gratitude for Christ’s tender mercies in my life each day?
